Vista 64bit connected to shared 32bit XP printer

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Both PC's will print just fine via USB. But having the networked Vista 64 laptop print to it wirelessly was a nightmare as XP 32 was NOT hosting a proper driver.  It would ask for an unknown INF file during install.

Jeff S. had this problem.

Before doing any of the below.  I added the printer as a LRP or parallel printer to the Vista 64 bit machine to get the driver in place with a 64 bit version.

Then did the following procedure to add it.

Here's a workaround:
1. Open the Devices and Printers folder.
2. Click on "Add a Printer".
3. Click "Add a local printer".
4. Select "Create a new port". The type of port should be "Local Port". Click Next.
5. Enter the remote print

share name, e.g. "\\server\printer" and press Enter.   —  Get this EXACT share name from the Host PC
6. Select the Canon Inkjet MP780 Series driver.
7. Go through and finish adding the printer.

winmail.dat Problem with attachments

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

I helped a client find a solution to the "winmail.dat" email attachment issue.  I had seen this a few times before, it's rare, but resolvable.

The problem is that you are using Outlook (I assume) to send attachments.  You are sending them as Rich Text format.  Normally HTML is used and won't cause problems.  Some  webmail programs do not like RTF.  The other major one is AOL.  So, A. It can be corrected on your end if you are in fact using Outlook to send mail.

How to Configure Outlook NOT to send Winmail.dat attachments

To Turn off Rich Text sending for messages in Microsoft Outlook

1) Click on Tools
2) Click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
3) In the Send in this Message Format list, select Plain Text, and then click OK.

This will set your default sending method to Plain Text, which will lose your special formatting options with fonts, colors, etc. However everyone, no matter what email program they are using, will now be able to receive your email with no problems.

B.   I installed a ".dat" convertor type program.  It's a few extra steps, but it works.

ODG Trojan any.exe file will not run

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

This rootkit virus is nasty.  Upon arrival, any .exe file would not run.  The work around was to open for instance, malwarebytes.exe.  The standard "choose program to open this with dialog" comes up.  You have to browse to the original file, ie, malwarebytes and then it would open.  Annoying, but effective as most people wouldn't know to do this.

Once again, ONLY NOD32 detects it.  SO does GMER rootkit, but ONLY combofix removed it and it's not fast, it took about 30 to 45 minutes to get combofix to complete remove it.
