Multires allows you to write a batch file to reset redo the resolution settings if the monitor won’t rember them on restart.

dimensions, bit count and lastly the refresh rate

Put the little multires file in the system32 directory and then make a txt file and rename it a .bat drag a shortcut to it into the XP startup folder. Put the BAT file somewhere it won’t get deleted like in the root of the C drive.

taskmgr ctrl alt delte does nothing Manager

November 23rd, 2009

Task Manager file NOT missing, but a virus added a ‘debugger’ key.

I found a registry key under hklm/software/microsoft/windows NT/current version/Image File Execution Options…with taskmgr.exe and value labled “debugger”. When i removed this key task manager would open again from everywhere, without having to rename it. i also found a bunch of anti virus applications listed under this key, with the purpose i’m sure of stopping them from running, too. this wall all the result of an infection from Windows PC Defender.

How to tag people in Facebook wall or status posts.

November 21st, 2009

Just type as normal. But use the ‘@’ sign and start typing the first name of the friend you want to tag. Facebook will populate the names for you and those people tagged will have the message show up on their wall.

If FaceBook will not load. Try re-freshing your router or calling your ISP. It could also be a socket error with your TCP/IP. As a final check, flush your DNS by opening a command prompt and typing ‘ipconfig /flushdns’. Good luck, and please keep reading our blog for more fascinating tech tips!

Remove IPCONFIG extra tunnel on Vista/7

November 18th, 2009

To remove all this stuff so ipconfig at a CMD prompt isn’t such a mess.  It’s just unselecting the boxes and then adding the one registry key.  Yes, you MUST restart.

Disable IPv6

Unlike in Windows XP, IPv6 in Windows Vista cannot be uninstalled. To disable IPv6 on a specific connection complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Windows logo located at the bottom left of the screen, and select Network (located on the right hand side of menu).

    Windows menu.

  2. Double click on Network and Sharing Center (along the top panel).

    Network and Sharing Center.

  3. Click the View Status link.

    Network and Sharing Center.

  4. The Local Area Connection Status dialogue box will be displayed. Click the Properties button.

    Local Area Connection Status.

  5. You will be prompted by UAC (User Access Control) prompt asking either to supply the username and password for an administrative user or you will not be allowed to continue.
  6. Next you will be faced with a Local Area Connection Properties dialogue box. Firstly under This connection uses the following items: ensure that Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) is not checked and select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click OK.

    Local Area Connection Properties.

The above method disables IPv6 on your LAN interfaces and connections, but does not disable IPv6 on TUNNEL interfaces or the IPv6 LOOPBACK interfaces.

To disable IPv6 on TUNNEL and LOOPBACK interfaces requires the following steps:

  1. Click the Windows logo located at the bottom left of the screen.
  2. Type regedit in the Start Search entry at the bottom of the menu.

    Registry Editor.

  3. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\parameters

    Registry Editor.

  4. Right click anywhere on the right hand side of the window and select New and then DWORD.

    Registry Editor.

  5. Name the DWORD DisabledComponents.
  6. Double click DisabledComponents to modify the value.
  7. Change the data value to 1 and ensure that Base is set to Hexadecimal.

    Registry Editor.

  8. Close regedit and re-start the computer.

Windows 7 on a Dual layer disc and edit the Boot Loader

October 10th, 2009

I burned a Windows 7 disk to a DVD dual layer and one of my PC's would boot from it, one would not.  I burned 2 disks and even used an external USB DVD reader.  After painful searching for answers, I reburned the DVD on a single layer DVD-RW and it then was bootable on my Dell XPS m1330 drive.  Bottom line, some DVD drives are finicky about DL discs.

Also, I wanted my laptop to dual boot Vista and 7.  Done, but nothing short of 20 reboots and for a while it would reboot to only Vista, and then only 7 for a while.  The bootloader in vista is editable via DOS, or much easier the Utility called "EasyBCD" from here http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1  .  The CMD prompt edit doesn't look like a good time.

Vista 64bit connected to shared 32bit XP printer

September 16th, 2009

Both PC's will print just fine via USB. But having the networked Vista 64 laptop print to it wirelessly was a nightmare as XP 32 was NOT hosting a proper driver.  It would ask for an unknown INF file during install.

Jeff S. had this problem.

Before doing any of the below.  I added the printer as a LRP or parallel printer to the Vista 64 bit machine to get the driver in place with a 64 bit version.

Then did the following procedure to add it.

Here's a workaround:
1. Open the Devices and Printers folder.
2. Click on "Add a Printer".
3. Click "Add a local printer".
4. Select "Create a new port". The type of port should be "Local Port". Click Next.
5. Enter the remote print

share name, e.g. "\\server\printer" and press Enter.   —  Get this EXACT share name from the Host PC
6. Select the Canon Inkjet MP780 Series driver.
7. Go through and finish adding the printer.

winmail.dat Problem with attachments

September 3rd, 2009

I helped a client find a solution to the "winmail.dat" email attachment issue.  I had seen this a few times before, it's rare, but resolvable.

The problem is that you are using Outlook (I assume) to send attachments.  You are sending them as Rich Text format.  Normally HTML is used and won't cause problems.  Some  webmail programs do not like RTF.  The other major one is AOL.  So, A. It can be corrected on your end if you are in fact using Outlook to send mail.

http://www.pchell.com/support/winmaildat.shtml

How to Configure Outlook NOT to send Winmail.dat attachments

To Turn off Rich Text sending for messages in Microsoft Outlook

1) Click on Tools
2) Click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
3) In the Send in this Message Format list, select Plain Text, and then click OK.

This will set your default sending method to Plain Text, which will lose your special formatting options with fonts, colors, etc. However everyone, no matter what email program they are using, will now be able to receive your email with no problems.

B.   I installed a ".dat" convertor type program.  It's a few extra steps, but it works.
